Yamaha FZ-09 and MT-09

For awhile there, you’d think that Triumph had a lock on the three-cylinder, across-the-frame engine. But Yamaha had a strong history with triples that everyone seemed to forget until the 2014 Yamaha FZ-09 came along. With a new-generation, CP-3 engine, the FZ-09 combined a compact, lightweight aluminum chassis with a fresh take on the modern triple. Of course there were four valves per cylinder. Of course there’s liquid cooling. Of course it had ride-by-wire and a 120-degree crankshaft configuration.

But nobody expected the 847cc triple to be so screamingly entertaining, with a grumbly midrange surge followed by an arm-hair-raising high-rpm wail. Against the other sub-1000cc naked bikes, the FZ-09 was the feral cat in a cage of medicated sloths. Yamaha refined the FZ-09, renamed it MT-09, sanded some of the rough edges off, and for the 2021 model year gave it a tad more displacement. But the bad-boy attitude remains, making the FZ/MT-09 one of the most fun and engaging motorcycles on the plant.

And since it’s a naked bike, FZ-09 and MT-09 owners expect it to do more than chew through tires at a track day, though it can certainly do that, too. No, the FZ, became successful as a commuter and even touring motorcycle for those who like to travel the minimalist lifestyle.

Naturally, there are places to improve the FZ-09 and MT-09 for daily commutes and weekend tours, starting with DENALI lighting. DENALI’s sturdy and weather-resistant fender mounts can handle the more compact LED driving lights with ease, from the tidy DM, through the more power D2, and on up to the new four-LED S4. The purpose of any of these is to greatly supplement the MT-09’s admittedly so-so headlight with much more on-road illumination, and to make you more visible to oncoming cars and other motorcycles. You can add DENALI’s DRL Illumination Packages, which combine six LEDs in a row for superb visibility on the road, and can be ordered with amber lenses. Out back, add one or two DENALI B6 taillight modules so drivers coming up behind (and your riding buddies trying to catch back up) know when you’re on the MT-09’s excellent brakes. Or maybe mount three, this is a modern-day Yamaha triple, after all.
