Honda Monkey

When the Honda Grom started flying out of dealerships in 2014, Honda saw a good thing happening to small-displacement motorcycles in the U.S. And not long after came the Monkey, sharing a good bit of the Grom’s running gear, including 124cc air-cooled single that was born before you (and maybe your parents, too) and pint-sized dimensions. Rather than looking forward for styling, like the Grom did, the Monkey looked back, at the Z-series Hondas that underpinned the formative years of so many riders.

The Monkey is somewhere between those old lawnmower-powered minibikes and larger, more mainstream bikes. It’s larger than the original Z bikes (called Monkey bikes originally because of the way they made adults look while riding them) and more modern, with disc brakes, suspension front and rear, an electric starter that always goes, and lights that always work. Somehow Honda managed to capture the style of the original Monkey bikes while putting a reasonable modern two-wheeler under there.

Like the Grom, the Monkey has been a huge hit with urban riders, college students, and oldsters looking for a quick trip down memory lane on the way to Whole Foods and REI. And, lord knows, those aging hipsters need to be kept safe in traffic—to see the road and to be seen by others—because, you know, hip replacement surgeries aren’t cheap.

DENALI’s compact Articulating Bar Mount clamps are the perfect solution to mounting a set of powerful yet power-efficient LED motorcycle lights to your Monkey. (Does this count as “monkeying around” with your new motorcycle?) The DM and D2 are small and powerful, but the S4 quad-LED light is also a good choice for the Monkey. Because the Monkey is small, consider the B6 tail light, a six-LED array of lights that run a partial brightness as an extra tail light and full, super-intense brightness as a secondary brake light. Easy to install and a great way for drivers angling to get a better look at your Monkey to know you’re on the brakes. DENALI’s T3 Signal Pods can duplicate turnsignals, and adding a SoundBomb horn will make other drivers who may not be able to see you actually hear that you’re there. Because anything as cute as a Monkey needs to be seen and heard on the road through more than its retro-cool styling.
